ALLPI Vegetable Tanning Training in Mozambique

Africa Leather and Leather Products Institute (ALLPI) in collaboration with PEACE PARKS FOUNDATION NPC for the Herding for Health Programme is proud to announce the commencement of a training program to enhance skill at the community level in vegetable tanning (plant-based) and leather products development techniques in Mozambique.

 The training program’s objective is to enhance skill in leather processing to the participants at the community and Micro, Small and Medium-level Enterprises (MSME) levels to facilitate the transfer of technology in aspects of community vegetable tanning-based techniques.

The 30-day training program started on July 22nd and will end up on August 20th 2024. The ALLPI team is composed of Harrison Mungai, Leather Value Chain and Tannery Expert, who is conducting vegetable tanning and Mr Feraw Kabede (ALLPI Consultant) is conducting leather products development. The training has attracted 25 participants (20 males and 5 females) who are drawn from different parts of Mozambique.

The training workshop was officially opened by Ms Zvikomborero Tangawamira, Programme Manager of Herding for Health at Peace Parks Foundation. In her official opening remarks, Ms Zvikomborero welcomed ALLPI team and the trainees stating that the workshop’s aim was to equip the Community with leather processing skill using vegetable tanning material and leather products development techniques.  She further urged the participants to take the opportunity to learn from the ALLPI Experts team through interactive and practical demonstration sessions.

The training aims to provide skills development to the trainees at the community and MSME levels to facilitate the transfer of technology in vegetable tanning and products development.

 Expected outcome

At the end of training the trainees are expected to demonstrate basic knowledge, skill, understanding and attitude of:

 

  • Explaining requisites needed towards conformity and compliance to national and global standards;
  • Comprehending and identifying the technology in aspects of community vegetable tanning-based techniques;
  • Essential evaluation of hides and skins and their quality;
  • Recognizing, explaining, and performing appropriate vegetable tanning of hides and skins;
  • Capability towards knowledge evolution towards productive and competitive production of products;
  • Adapt to requisite tanning technology relevant to community and MSMEs level, and
  • Be able to produce basic leather products.
