Kyambogo University in collaboration with Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives Uganda, and Africa Leather and Leather Products Institute (ALLPI) organized the first Academic and Practical Skills Inter-university conference and Exhibition for Leather and Leather Products from 7th to 9th August 2019, in Kampala Uganda.
The Conference and the leather and leather products exhibition was officially opened by the Chief Guest, Hon. Amelia Kyambadde, Minister of Trade Industry and Cooperatives. The Vice Chancellor of Kymbogo University, Prof. Dr. Eli Katunguka-Rwakishaya and the Conference Convener and Dean of Faculty of Science, Dr. Kwetegyeka Justus, also made opening remarks.
ALLPI was represented by Prof. Mekonnen Hailemariam, Advisor to the Executive Director and Mr. Michael Kiraye, Institutional Capacity Development and consultancy Expert.
The Conference aim was promoting the interaction between Academia, Industry and government (Triple Helix model) for the promotion of the leather sector in Africa. It was attended by more than 100 participants representing academic institutions, different government ministries, enterprises and other stakeholders along the leather value chain.
There were more than 20 papers presented in the three days conference. The APSIC 2019 forum allowed to promote interactions between the academia, industry and government; share knowledge, opportunities and challenges about the leather sector; and showcase appropriate technologies and innovations in leather processing and leather products.
