Mwinyikione Mwinyihija, Executive Director About Lake Malawi Lake Malawi, also known as Lake Nyasa in Tanzania and Lago Niassa in Mozambique, is an African Great Lake and the southernmost lake in the East African Rift system, located between Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania. It is the fourth largest fresh water lake in the world by volume, the ninth largest lake in the world by area—and the third largest and second deepest lake in Africa. Lake Malawi is home to more species of fish than any other lake, including at least 700 species of cichlids. The Mozambique portion of the lake was officially declared a reserve by the Government of Mozambique on June 10, 2011, while in Malawi a portion of the lake is included in Lake Malawi National Park. Lake Malawi is a meromictic lake, meaning that its water layers do not mix. The permanent stratification of Lake Malawi’s water and the oxic-anoxic boundary (relating to oxygen in the water) are maintained by moderately small chemical and thermal gradients. Lake Malawi has two inhabited islands: Likoma Island and Chizumulu Island. The larger being the Likoma island, and together make up the Likoma District. Lake Malawi is very beautiful, and is appealing to tourists because of its islands and beaches. Some of the most important activities offered by the local resorts include snorkeling, boat riding, kayaking, scuba diving, sailing, camping, water skiing, trips to the islands, beach football, and many other water activities. Press Release December 8, 2019 Preparations in place to hold Annual Regional Consultative Forum 2019 in Lilongwe, Malawi MALAWI HOSTS THE ALLPI ANNUAL REGIONAL CONSULTATIVE FORUM 2019 The Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism of Malawi in collaboration with Africa Leather and Leather Products Institute (ALLPI) has organised the 2019 Annual Regional Consultative Forum in Lilongwe from 11th – 13th December 2019 at Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe under the theme:“Develop Africa’s Leather Value Chain through research, business linkages and technology transfer” ALLPI, headquartered in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, is an intergovernmental Institution mandated for spearheading the development of the leather sector in Africa in general and in COMESA Sub-Region in particular. Its main prerogative is to assist the private and public leather industries in promoting value addition, productivity, competitiveness, trade and regional integration. The mode of attaining these objectives is through providing technical, technological and information inputs through pooling relevant capacities and capabilities, and mobilizing resources. This forum is anchored on the Triple Helix Approach of the Private Sector - Government - Academia Partnership and is expected to convene more than 70 international delegates across the globe.
